Fluoride is a mineral that is commonly found in water. For most people, fluoride isn’t an issue, but for some, it can be toxic.
Reverse osmosis systems are one of the best ways to remove contaminants from your drinking water and make sure you’re getting clean water at home or work. But does reverse osmosis remove fluoride? And do they remove all of it? Let’s find out!

Which filters are effective in removing fluoride?
If you have a reverse osmosis system with a final filter (like carbon block) then yes, it will remove almost 100% of fluoride from the water leaving only pure water behind.
We always recommend using such filtration systems if you want to reduce your exposure to harmful toxins like fluorides and heavy metals found in tap water.
Some other filters that are effective in removing fluoride from the water include:
KDF filters (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) – these are another viable option if you want to remove contaminants like fluoride and heavy metals from your drinking water.
Activated carbon filters – this filter is mostly used in commercial applications and you won’t find it inside home reverse osmosis systems and if you do go for it.
How effective is reverse osmosis against fluoride?
Reverse osmosis is very effective in removing fluoride from the water. It can reduce levels of it as low as 0.1 ppm.
Unfortunately, reverse osmosis systems aren’t able to remove all the fluoride from the water leaving only 0.1 ppm behind. This can still be considered a lot, but not enough if you are looking for the purest water possible.
Moreover, it depends upon the other factors like:
- Quality of the system you are using.
- Amount of water you are filtering.
- Your methods to reduce fluoride in reverse osmosis systems
- The type of filters you are using.
If you have a reverse osmosis system that only reduces 90% of the fluoride then it can leave up to 1.4 ppm in your water (as per the EPA’s standards). So you should stop using your water if you are experiencing any symptoms of fluoride poisoning.
What can I do to reduce fluoride in reverse osmosis systems?
The first thing you can do is to find out what’s the amount of fluoride in your water and whether it’s safe to drink or not.
It is recommended to use reverse osmosis water that has less than 0.3-0.4 ppm of fluoride, but if the amount of it is above 0.7 ppm, then you should check your filters and replace them with a better quality filter.
All in all, it’s safe to use reverse osmosis systems with fluoride.
However, if you want to remove as much of the fluoride as possible from your water, then you should reconsider using a filter that has a carbon block or KDF system.
Also, make sure to check your filter regularly and replace it as soon as the quality of your water drops.
